sidney kitson My interests are two,as a former policeman in india,i was,and am still interested in the exploits of great policemen of the past-Sleeman is probably the greatest policeman of all time, for reasons known to all of you.scondly i am a philatelist,I have picture postcards,of the town made famous by him, and these cards are franked there, bearing the name of the town sleemanabad.they depict the flame that still perpetually burtns to his memory.this information was given to cliff.the photos are two in number, one an ancient black and white ,and the other in colour taken by me.There isanother picture postcard with a peripheral connection to the sleeman legend.these are of considerable philatelic interest, and not easily available on the philatelic market. i am glad to note several entries in the guestbook by students of the legend,of indian origin.and note that there may be several descendants in india. If anyone can help me get a letter or anything signed by sleeman for my collection, i will be glad to exchange this for card.contact by e-mail- sjkitson@hotmail.com best wishes to all. Does anyone have info. on or relatives of:- William Sleeman who came from Cornwall to Cardiff where he married Louisa Davies in 1829? He was my gt. gt. grandfather. He was either from St. Ives or Padstow. Great site. ajoy chaudhuri I regret to say that I do not have any particular interest in any Genealogical Tree of the Sleemans. 2. I am looking for the Descendants of William Henry Sleeman (on the basis of my reading, I believe that there are the Brigadier J C Sleeman and Mrs Sleeman, and, the Sleeman that I wish to know about more, was the Great-Grandfather of Brigadier J C Sleeman),better known as "Thuggee" Sleeman, in India. I shall be grateful, if someone could please put me in touch with any of them. 3. Just in case, somebody really takes interest, I provide some details of the Sleeman that I am looking for, below : William Henry Sleeman was born in 1788; he first came to India in 1809, as an Infantry Cadet in the the then existing East India Company's employ, in the Bengal Army, when he was about Twenty-One; he was a soldier, a District Officer, a Police Officer, and, rose to be the Resident of Avadh. The reason why he continues to be a legendary personality in India, even today (he died in 1857), is the successful operation that he had mounted against the Thugs (just in case somebody does not know who or what Thugs were : Thugs were highway robbers, who strangled their victims, and, then, buried the bodies to avoid detection). 4. My interest is purely academic : that is, Sleeman continues to remain one of my Heroes (along with some others, such as, Jim Corbett the Hunter of Man-Eaters alone par excellence, Heinrich Schliemann who dug up Troy, Simon Wiesenthal the Nazi-Hunter, and, some others), and, should I get an opportunity, I would like to write about him. 5.Again, in case somebody is interested as to who I am, here are the details : I am a Fifty-Three old Man, teaching Indian Constitutional Law, in the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, at Mussoorie, up in the Himalayas. 6. I wonder, is some one out there, listening? This has been designed by Andrew and Mike Sleeman to assist fellow researchers into Sleeman family history. The site gives indexes to Sleeman data held by Andrew and Mike, most of which was assembled by the collaboration of the late Rev. Arthur Sleeman (Andrew's father) and His Honour Colin Sleeman over the past 50 years or so. Variant spellings of the Sleeman surname are included. Both our family trees are included and Colin Sleeman's tree will be added soon. Much of the data relates to the Sleeman heartland of Devon and Cornwall in England, where Sleemans have lived since the 15th century, and probably earlier.More information will be added as time permits.
