My interests are two,as a former policeman in india,i was,and am still interested in the exploits of great policemen of the past-Sleeman is probably the greatest policeman of all time, for reasons known to all of you.scondly i am a philatelist,I have picture postcards,of the town made famous by him, and these cards are franked there, bearing the name of the town sleemanabad.they depict the flame that still perpetually burtns to his memory.this information was given to cliff.the photos are two in number, one an ancient black and white ,and the other in colour taken by me.There isanother picture postcard with a peripheral connection to the sleeman legend.these are of considerable philatelic interest, and not easily available on the philatelic market. i am glad to note several entries in the guestbook by students of the legend,of indian origin.and note that there may be several descendants in india. If anyone can help me get a letter or anything signed by sleeman for my collection, i will be glad to exchange this for card.contact by e-mail- sjkitson@hotmail.com best wishes to all.

My wife is descended from Sir William Henry Sleeman. I'm indebted to your website for including a link to Colin Sleeman's family tree which has given me my wife's Sleeman ancestors going back to c. 1700. Some of this information is now included in our family tree at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/o/a/Charles-Moat/

I am thinking about reprinting James Sleeman's account of the Thuggee cult suppressed by his grandfather Sir William Sleeman. Are there any copyright objections? the book was first printed in 1920 or any other relevant information would be useful. Owen

There are only 6 left in my family. I have purchased items from the brewery online, and my compliments to a very nice lady Robin Hood. I had some damage in shipping, and she was a very pleasant person to deal with. My thanks to her. Gerald Sleeman

Hi everyone. My great grandparents, Evan & Ann Sleeman(Howells) were from Mitchel Dean. They were married there. They went to U.S. in about 1845. First to Mississouri, then Utah and then to Calif. I would like info on the Mitchel Dean era and to know if we still have relatives there. Please contact me if you have any family history, or if you would just like to be in touch.

I regret to say that I do not have any particular interest in any Genealogical Tree of the Sleemans. 2. I am looking for the Descendants of William Henry Sleeman (on the basis of my reading, I believe that there are the Brigadier J C Sleeman and Mrs Sleeman, and, the Sleeman that I wish to know about more, was the Great-Grandfather of Brigadier J C Sleeman),better known as "Thuggee" Sleeman, in India. I shall be grateful, if someone could please put me in touch with any of them. 3. Just in case, somebody really takes interest, I provide some details of the Sleeman that I am looking for, below : William Henry Sleeman was born in 1788; he first came to India in 1809, as an Infantry Cadet in the the then existing East India Company's employ, in the Bengal Army, when he was about Twenty-One; he was a soldier, a District Officer, a Police Officer, and, rose to be the Resident of Avadh. The reason why he continues to be a legendary personality in India, even today (he died in 1857), is the successful operation that he had mounted against the Thugs (just in case somebody does not know who or what Thugs were : Thugs were highway robbers, who strangled their victims, and, then, buried the bodies to avoid detection). 4. My interest is purely academic : that is, Sleeman continues to remain one of my Heroes (along with some others, such as, Jim Corbett the Hunter of Man-Eaters alone par excellence, Heinrich Schliemann who dug up Troy, Simon Wiesenthal the Nazi-Hunter, and, some others), and, should I get an opportunity, I would like to write about him. 5.Again, in case somebody is interested as to who I am, here are the details : I am a Fifty-Three old Man, teaching Indian Constitutional Law, in the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, at Mussoorie, up in the Himalayas. 6. I wonder, is some one out there, listening?

My grandfather, George Sleeman, came to the United States from County Durham (Sacriston) England about 1905. He was born and raised in County Durham, and was an apprentice carpenter prior to coming to America while in his early 20's. He lived in Ohio until his death in the early 1960's. I have been told that his parents, in their later years, moved to Cornwall, which was their native area. Their names were John and Elizabeth, and they died sometime in the 1940's. John, I believe, had been a lay minister.

Launch of Sleeman Genealogy website

A new website "Sleeman Genealogy" at http://www.geocities.com/sleeman_genealogy/index.html is now up and running.

This has been designed by Andrew and Mike Sleeman to assist fellow researchers into Sleeman family history. The site gives indexes to Sleeman data held by Andrew and Mike, most of which was assembled by the collaboration of the late Rev. Arthur Sleeman (Andrew's father) and His Honour Colin Sleeman over the past 50 years or so. Variant spellings of the Sleeman surname are included. Both our family trees are included and Colin Sleeman's tree will be added soon.

Much of the data relates to the Sleeman heartland of Devon and Cornwall in England, where Sleemans have lived since the 15th century, and probably earlier.More information will be added as time permits.

Andrew Sleeman, Dublin, Ireland. email sleemana@esatclear.ie Mike Sleeman, Southampton, England. email mikesleeman@prcford.freeserve.co.uk

William James Sleeman: 20th January 1916-9th March 2002.

I am just writing a short message here to let all the Sleemans know that one of the Cornwall Sleemans passed away last night.aged 86.

His name was William James Sleeman (He was known around Newlyn/Penzance as Radmore). He was born on the 16th January 1916 in Paul (Near Mousehole) Cornwall. William James had 3 children, William Clifford John Sleeman(1942....My Dad) Brian, born 1943/44( He was killed in a motor accident in 1946) and Pauline Sleeman (Born 1949). He had a brother named Charles Verdun Sleeman Born 1917 and died 1994/5?

His father was named William Charles Sleeman and was married to Elizabeth Cloke, They lived in Newlyn untill William James was about 12 years old when they then moved to Swindon.

William Charles had 3 brothers: Richard (Who moved to Seattle), Gorden who moved to Newport (South Wales) and Willfred who moved to Swindon.

In the coming months I will be able to give much more information about the Cornish Sleemans (Which I am directly descended from).

Thank you for reading!

Richard William Sleeman.

I am trying to trace my branch of the family tree and would be delighted to hear from anyone who might have info. relating to any of the following. My great, gt, grandfather's name was William Sleeman who came either from Padstow or St Ives, Cornwall. He was a shipwright and moved to Cardiff where he married Louisa Davies,22.8.1929. Their children were, Julia, William Emma Edward & Frederick. William, my great grandfather was an optical instrument maker who moved to Swansea & married Elizabeth Owen 29.10.1870 (it is possible this was his second marriage). Their children were Louisa Elizah, William James, Martha Jane, Thomas Frederick and Mary Emma. William James was my grandfather who married Lucy Matilda in Swansea. Great site, can't believe there are so many of us.

Welcome to the second version of the Sleeman Family Web site. Sorry it took sooooooo long to get it updated. I had no idea that anyone would ever find a use for a site like this.  I hope you find the site helpful and interesting. I plan to expand the offerings with some new sections that you might find useful. Your input will help make this a site into something fun so let me know.

Also, I'm looking for old photos with stories, so if you have a scanner and a story, I'll take plain text email and uncompressed JPG or GIF images around 4" x 6" in size. Send them to me at webmaster@sleeman.org.

Thanks for all of your interest and support.
